I don't normally watch television, but when I'm trying to study I find that having a little background noise helps me focus more than sitting in a room by myself. It being an election year we're currently being bombarded with funny political ads from people touting what they have achieved or pointing fingers at another person. After seeing the campaign ad for a woman running for state representative (i think) that was a mother, a mayor, a quaker, a baker and a candlestick maker I had a thougt: Look at her, working her way up to higher places of office.
Then I had another thought...of course she has to do things that way because that's the only way she's going to learn how the system works, how to manipulate the system and to accept it because well it's been this way forever.
Third thought! That's why they make you work your way up from the bottom. If you have to deal with the system for a long enough period of time then you're less likely to become a mover and a shaker (as opposed to a candlestick maker). The system will have either beaten you down so badly and worn you out to the point of indifference or you'll become one of those people that manipulate the system to get what you want.
[If you wanted a smoother segue...you can't always get what you want]
This is how it is though. A bill or issue can't pass on it's merits alone so you ad something to it to swing one vote your way and another thing to get another vote. The bill becomes so bloated with things that don't even have anything to do with the original piece of legislation. Why do we do it? Why? Why? What reason could we have for such a thing? Verily, not even god knows. If there is a god then god is probably out there somewhere looking down and saying 'Even cataloging makes more sense than this' (bit of library humor for you there).
I think it would be awesome if we just took someone who was young, idealistic, intelligent, logical, practical, and has brilliant ideas (to name a few qualities), and put them in power. They haven't been corrupted or beaten by the system of doing things. They want things to be different. This person probably wouldn't be a liberal arts or business major. Sorry, but I have yet to meet a person that majored in a nonscientific field of study that embodied most of these qualities. So english and sociology majors, you're out of the running. You too, business majors. Sorry, the fate of the world is at stake here and I've seen what you types do to things.
